Ephesians 1:7-10

In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight, making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. Walking the Path in 2015—Part One

Now that it is a new year, I wanted to share a little bit about our previous year and what we are looking forward to in this new year.  Our lives look much different than they did (and oddly the same) at the beginning of 2014, and we have certainly changed ourselves.

Every year for the past several years I have taken the time at the beginning of a new year to examine my life and set goals that I want to work towards.  I don’t call them resolutions because they are not as firm or as concrete as normal “New Year’s Resolutions.”  They also tend to be about the same every year, not because I don’t accomplish goals, but more of the fact that it is a continuation on working to be a better person, wife, and Christian.  There is no end point to my goals and they are definitely fluid in the fact that I revisit them every so often through the year and adjust to fit where I am in life and correct what may not be working.

But before I go into what I am looking at this year, let me talk a little bit about last year.  It is always important to examine the previous year to know where you are headed the next year.  2014 started off kind of rough for us.  Our only car had major problems that sent it to the shop many times before finally being totaled in a car accident.  Our house, which is over 100 years old, also had things that needed to be done to it, including replacing two major kitchen appliances within the year.  Add to that many other things causing problems like health issues…  We got through it and it made us and our marriage stronger.

As things began to settle down slowly, we started to look at adoption through the foster care system.  We ended up becoming foster parents with interest in adoption.  Remember how I said our life looks oddly the same as last year at this time, but we are different?  In October, we welcomed a little into our home, who went to live with family in December.  We were blessed those few short months and we are currently awaiting another little, but right now it is just the two of us and our dogs again.

Most of what I learned last year was an increase in the amount of flexibility that I need to have and more importantly my trust in God’s plans and a dependence on Him.  Since almost everything that happened to us in the beginning of the year was completely out of our hands and the only thing that we could control was how we responded, I learned much more to wait on God for what He wanted.  As the year progressed, I saw how His hand was on everything and how He led us exactly where He wanted us.  It wasn’t an easy journey, but through it I learned to trust in Him much greater than I ever have before.  And I am sure that what I’ve already seen in His plan is only the tip of the iceberg as my life continues to progress.  As I look to where my husband and I feel like God is leading us, I see Him working in both of us to mature our character and our walks with Him.  Through trials, we have seen the greatest growth and come out so much stronger.  We have also seen some of His promised blessings for walking through fire, not only in our personal growth (which is a blessing most!) but also in other ways.

So join me next week as I share with you some of my goals that I have set for myself in 2015.

through His grace alone!
Sarah
